The next 1 hour meeting of the GSE UK Large Systems Working Group, will take place on Wednesday 23rd June 2021 via Zoom – session will run from 13:00 to 14:00 (UK time). This meeting is free to attend and is open to both GSE member companies and non-members.
The subject for this meeting will be “Large Systems: After the Storms, What Next?”.
Abstract: It has undeniably been a year of changes. Challenged by the global pandemic, every sector has been rethinking their role, their practices and how well they match the worlds changing needs and priorities. In facilitating an increasingly online world, and supporting the growth of electronic payments from around the globe, large systems have proved their worth but what does this mean for their future? Thinking about recruitment and skills, what can large systems people learn from recent events and how can they plan for what comes next? What are the conversations you need to be having with the C-Suite to get your share of the talent and the credit? How will large systems people set the agenda for a new world of challenges and opportunities? In this talk we will consider these issues with a focus on the properties of technologies, people and skills that may shape this new era.
This session will be presented by Dr Herb Daly. Dr Daly is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Wolverhampton. He has a background in industry as a software developer and systems modeller. As an academic he works with students to help them understand and make creative inroads into new technologies. His research looks at how large-scale information systems can help tackle the biggest problems facing industry and society. He takes a keen interest in developing new talent on the platform and acts as mentoring to the University Mainframe Student Society (Wolverhampton MaSS). A regular speaker at conferences, his success and engagement with the System Z community have been recognised with three IBM Champion Awards.
